Why We Need Theater

There is something about going to a play that is unlike anything else we ever experience. We go in with certain expectations, ready for a certain type of experience, and then leave with sometimes a major shift in our mental and emotional paradigm. Its almost like we experience a lifetime during those few hours.

Theater doesn't give us food or shelter. However, I would suggest that theater gives us something even more important, and fulfills an even deeper need. Theater gets us outside of ourselves. It gives us a moment in time when we have an outside center of focus, and are seeing and experiencing and feeling things we would never otherwise have felt.

C. S. Lewis said "we read to know we're not alone." I would expand that to say, "we play to know we're not alone." Our lives are enriched, our horizons expanded, but perhaps the best thing theater gives us is a lesson in walking someone elses shoes. We understand and relate to other people better, and realize how much other people understand us. We find companionship in our shared experiences and comprehension for the unshared.

We truly are not alone.
